In this section you will find information on waste disposal in The Hague region.

In the Netherlands different municipalities follow different procedures and systems when disposing of normal everyday garbage.  However, garden waste and other organic materials such as vegetables and fruit should be deposited in the green containers ‘groenbak’ provided by the municipality (upon request). Annually, municipalities publish a calendar with the timetable of the garbage collection days per postal code and the addresses of local waste separation and recycling stations.

Other waste material has to be deposited at waste separation stations/containers: plastic, glass and paper. Paper is also collected once a month from the street (see your municipality's household waste calendar). Chemical waste such as paint, batteries and cooking oil as well as large household debris such as furniture, appliances and HiFi/computer equipment have to be disposed of at garbage and recycling stations (for which a pass is required, see below). Outdated medicines should be disposed of via pharmacies. Unwanted clothing can be disposed of in special containers, generally placed by local organisations and most often located close to shopping areas.

Den Haag (The Hague)

  • Here you find the digital household waste calendar. To find out the schedule in your neighbourhood fill in your postal code.
  • Read more on how to dispose of your waste.
  • Addresses of garbage and recycling stations & requesting a garbage pass (afvalpas)
  • Appointments can also be made for the collection of garden waste and oversized household waste:
Residents of The Hague who would like their large garden waste collected by the municipality can phone the Grofvuiltelefoon at tel. 070 - 366 08 08. Oversized household waste (grofvuil), such as furniture and appliances, will not be collected at the same time as the garden waste. For these items, you need to make a separate appointment. This way different types of waste can be kept apart and treated separately.
