Living in Scheveningen

Living in Scheveningen

Of the four largest Dutch cities (named the Randstad), The Hague is the only major city that is located directly by the sea. Scheveningen is situated between the city centre and the coastline, offering residents the best of both worlds. Duindorp, Scheveningen, Statenkwartier, Belgisch Park, Westbroekpark, Van Stolkpark, Oostduinen, and Internationale Zone are the neighbourhoods that make up Scheveningen and are all notable residential zones. The beach is a popular recreational area, with both locals and tourists enjoying the bars, restaurants, and activities on offer.

Everyday Life

With over 10 kilometres of coastline, Scheveningen has long been a tourist hotspot for those seeking sun, sand, and sea. Along its shoreline are several beach bars, restaurants, hotels, and attractions – a far cry from the area’s origins as a quaint fishing village. The area is also packed with nightlife and is home to two famous theatres, Circustheater and Zuiderstrandtheater, and several casinos.

But Scheveningen is also known as one of the greenest areas in the city. It has over 350 acres of parks and nature spaces, including Scheveningse Bosjes, Nieuwe Scheveningse Bosjes, and Westbroekpark. Those looking for a more laid-back lifestyle with easy access to the hustle and bustle of the city (or beach) will find it in one of Scheveningen’s residential areas.

Working and Education

With only 15 minutes of cycling or public transport separating the beach from The Hague city centre, Scheveningen is a great residential retreat for those commuting to Centrum. And many international companies have office spaces and headquarters here that attract international talent from all over the world.

When looking for schools and daycare centres, no commuting is needed. In Scheveningen you’ll find many options, including the International Waldorf School The Hague, which serves the educational needs of the international community as well as locals.

Healthcare

With many local doctors and healthcare specialists in the area, you’ll have no problem seeking out healthcare close to home. Scheveningen’s close proximity to the city centre also means that you’re in easy reach of the region’s main hospital system, HMC Westeinde hospital.

Transport Links

With a tram route running from The Hague Central Station to Scheveningen, it’s easy to come and go from the city centre. There are also numerous bus connections that offer convenient links to the rest of the region. The district’s close proximity to the city’s central train stations and to key motorways also means that residents are well connected to the rest of the country.
