Brexit, no deal & exchanging your driving licence

The UK will leave the EU on 31 October 2019. A no deal Brexit will have implications for your residency status, passport and driving licence.

Conditions

When British nationals came to live in the Netherlands, they were allowed to use their British driving licence. However, in the event of a no deal a British driving licence will no longer be recognised in the EU, as British nationals will no longer meet all of the following conditions:

  • You live in the Netherlands and are registered with your local municipality.
  • You are from the EU, the EEA, Switzerland OR are from a country with a special agreement OR you have the 30% ruling.
  • You have a valid residence permit (unless you are a citizen of the EU, EEA or Switzerland).
  • Your current driving licence is valid.
  • Your current driving licence, if issued in a country outside the EU, was issued after being a resident of that country for at least 185 days.

British nationals registered and living in the Netherlands before 31 October will have 15 months after Brexit to exchange their licence. Driving licences can be exchanged at the municipality.

Applying for a driving licence

The rules will be slightly different for British nationals registered who come to the Netherlands after Brexit. If you qualify for the 30% ruling you can exchange your driving licence at the municipality. However, if you are not entitled to the 30% ruling you will need to apply for a Dutch licence at the municipality. You will first have to pass a theory and practical driving test at the Central Office for Motor Vehicle Driver Testing (CBR).

Statement of Health

To exchange your driving licence or apply for your driving licence again, you may need to show a Statement of Health. You can purchase this medical declaration at The Hague International Centre, the CBR and many driving schools.

Deal?

If the UK negotiates a deal on their exit from the EU, UK nationals will meet the driving licence conditions and exchanging their driving licences will not be necessary.
