Brexit: Application for residence document in the Netherlands

Have you submitted your application for a residence document in the Netherlands? The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) is currently busy sending invitations to UK nationals to apply. Read on to find out what you can do to prepare for your residence document application when the invitation arrives.

Transition period

From 1 February 2020 up till 31 December 2020 is the Brexit transition period. During this period, UK nationals may continue to live, work and study in the Netherlands. You do not need a residence document – just a valid passport. However, this will change after the transition period. From 1 January 2021, UK nationals will require a residence document to continue living in the Netherlands.

Invitations to apply for residence document

The IND has been sending invitations to UK nationals and their family members to submit their applications for residence in the Netherlands after the transition period. It is not possible to apply for a residence document without an invitation from the IND.

These invitations are sent out in batches based on the year of your Personal Records Database (BRP) registration. IND have already sent invitations to UK nationals who have registered in 2019 and before. They are currently sending invitations to UK nationals who have registered in 2020.

After receiving the invitation letter, you can apply for a (new) residence document online. You are required to submit your application within 4 weeks of receiving the invitation.

Make sure you receive an invitation

To make sure that you receive an invitation to apply for a residence document, check that you are correctly registered in the BRP at your town hall/municipality ‘gemeente’. You can check your details on mijn.overheid.nl under ‘Identiteit, Persoonsgegevens’.

If you have not received an invitation from the IND, watch this video to learn what you can do to prepare for the application for a residence document.

If you are a UK national with a permanent EU residence document ‘duurzaam verblijf’, watch this video to learn what you can do to prepare for the exchange of your residence document for a new permanent residence document.
