Autumn holidays are coming up!! it’s the perfect time to explore, play and enjoy some quality time with your kids in The Hague. Annie M.G. Schmidt’s Bold and Brassy Kids
This autumn, visit the Children's Book Museum and enjoy Annie M.G. Schmidt’s 'Bold and Brassy Kids', a funny exhibition about the imaginary world of the queen of Dutch children's literature! There is plenty to do and experience in the exhibition. Get in Abeltje's lift for an exciting journey, make a cat blog with Minoes or build the most beautiful verses like a poem mason at Ibbeltjes Gedichtenbouwplaats.
Clingendael - The Japanese Garden
The Japanese Garden is the showpiece of Clingendael, located between The Hague and Wassenaar. It is the only Japanese garden in the Netherlands from the early 20th century. The historic garden features beautiful and rare trees and plants. The Japanese Garden is only open to the public for a short period each year, in spring and autumn. The expected opening time this autumn is in October from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Villa Ockenburgh
Escape the city without actually leaving The Hague. Surrounded by woodland and dunes near Kijkduin, the estate dates back to 1654, when poet and physician Jacob Westerbaen built the villa as his country retreat. Today, the restored villa and surrounding grounds are perfect for an autumn walk: explore the vibrant vegetable garden before stopping for coffee, lunch or something sweet at Villa Ockenburgh or the adjacent greenhouse.
Festival De Betovering - The Enchantment (17 Oct - 25 Oct)
Looking for fun cultural activities to do with your kids? Don’t miss the 27th edition of The Enchantment in The Hague. For nine days, kids up to 12 years old can enjoy theatre, dance, workshops, and street performances across the city centre. With more than 400 activities crafted to inspire kids’ creativity and imagination, it’s the perfect way for families to combine fun and culture this autumn.
Madestein Recreational Park
Madestein Recreational Park is one of the largest green open spaces in The Hague. Nestled in the outskirts of the city it has many cycle and walking pathways, bridleways, and a recreational lake. Hidden in the park is Pluk! City Farm where you can take a walk in the botanical garden and visit the petting zoo.
At the lunchroom you can enjoy (organic/vegetarian) cakes and bites, made with harvest from the farm, while your kids will be entratained by one of the many acivities Pluk offers during the holidays.
Haagse Hofjes
Did you know that The Hague has more than 100 small hidden courtyards ‘hofjes’? These courtyards surrounded by almshouses are true oases in the busy inner city. Go in search for them yourself or join the Haagse Hofjestour by Gilde Den Haag (in Dutch).
Pumpkin bike tour in Westland and Midden-Delfland
Westland, a region southwest of The Hague, has lots to offer during autumn. You can cycle the Pumpkin Soup tour, a route that passes many small market stalls, barns and shops in Westland and Midden Delfland. During your bike ride you can collect all the ingredients for a delicious pumpkin soup or to prepare for Halloween decorations, and discover the varied landscape at the same time! At the Staelduinse Bos, located near ‘s Gravenzande, it is the perfect time of the year to search for mushrooms in the forest and spot the bats that inhabit the old German bunkers. There are two walking routes dedicated to this, which you can find here (in Dutch).
De vakantiepas
Designed for children aged 4 to 12, De VakantiePas encourages kids to explore their city, try new things and stay active during the school holidays. The booklet includes a wide range of activities such as museum visits, treasure hunts, creative workshops, sports clinics and music or dance lessons. Many of these are either free or offered at a discounted rate. Each time a child participates in an activity, they receive a stamp in their booklet, making it a fun and rewarding way to track their holiday experiences.
Children attending primary school in The Hague can purchase an online version of the vakantiepas for 3.50€ at local libraries or the Zuiderparktheater every Tuesday to Thursday.
