More opportunities for family members of entrepreneurs

Published

Are you a spouse or family member of a self-employed international in the Netherlands? Policy makers have made it easier for you to find paid employment here.

The Dutch Cabinet has approved a change in legislation that will allow family members of self-employed internationals to work in paid employment without a work permit. With this new legislation, the Cabinet expects to attract more international entrepreneurs to the Netherlands.

How does this affect you as a self-employed international in the Netherlands?

The situation before January 2020

A spouse or family member of a self-employed international may only work as a self-employed person. Employers who hire a spouse or family member of a self-employed international must apply for a work permit (‘tewerkstellingsvergunning’ or ‘TWV’).

After January 2020

A spouse or family member of a self-employed international may be employed without any extra paperwork. This means, your spouse and/or family members will be allowed to work for any employer.
