The Hague, known for its political significance and royal presence, is also home to some of the Netherlands' most beautiful coastal areas. Just a short tram or bike ride away from the city center, you can escape to beautiful beaches and enjoy a ‘holiday day’ in your own town.

Scheveningen Beach – The Vibrant Heart of The Hague’s Coast

One of the most famous beaches in the Netherlands. If you are looking for some entertainment and activity, Scheveningen beach is the place to be!

It features a wide sandy coastline, the authentic Kurhaus Hotel, a bustling boulevard sprinkled with beach cafes, lounges and clubs, and the iconic pier with its Ferris wheel and bungee jump tower. On the pier itself you will find a selection of restaurants and little shops with clothes, accessories and hand crafted items. The beach is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports like surfing, sailing and kiteboarding.

For kids there is also plenty to do. Visit SeaLife Scheveningen aquarium, or enjoy the famous little bricks at LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Scheveningen. For a more cultural getaway visit the museum Beelden aan Zee, that is literally overlooking the sea. It is the only Dutch museum that focuses exclusively on contemporary international sculpture.

In summer, beach clubs and restaurants offer vibrant nightlife and delicious seafood with views of the North Sea. Some beach clubs are opened all year round. After a nice autumn or spring walk you can treat yourself with a nice hot chocolate for example. Some beach clubs even feature a cosy indoor fire place!

After a nice beachday, grab a bite at one of the food kiosks serving fresh sea foods or go for a stroll to Scheveningen harbour located more towards the center. Here you will find a broad selection of restaurants and bars.

Het Zwarte Pad – The Hidden Gem of Scheveningen

Located at the northern end of Scheveningen Beach, Het Zwarte Pad is a beloved spot among locals. Unlike the bustling main boulevard of Scheveningen, Het Zwarte Pad offers a more relaxed and laid-back beach experience. The more you walk towards the north, the less beach clubs you will see, ending with only beach and dunes.

From early spring to late autumn, you can enjoy drinks, music, and sunsets at one of the many beach pavilions. It’s a popular destination for young people, creatives, and anyone looking to unwind in a more intimate setting. Het Zwarte Pad is also a great starting point for walks or bike rides through the dunes of Meijendel, a beautiful nature reserve just north of The Hague. Whether you are there for a beach day, a sunset drink, or a peaceful walk, Het Zwarte Pad offers a unique blend of coastal charm and urban cool.

Meijendel – Nature’s Oasis by the Sea

Nestled between The Hague, Wassenaar, and the North Sea coast, Meijendel is the largest interconnected dune area in South-Holland. This stunning nature reserve is part of the Hollandse Duinen National Park and offers a peaceful escape from city life. It’s a paradise for hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers. The area is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and countless bird species, making it a popular spot for birdwatching and photography.

One of the highlights of Meijendel is the De Tapuit visitor center, where guests can learn about the local ecosystem, enjoy a drink at the café, or start one of the many walking routes. Families will also love the large Monkey forest playground – a fun and interactive place for children to spend some of the overflowing energy, as well as the educational water-themed trail.

On the other side of Schevingen harbour, towards the south, you have several nice beaches such as Zuiderstrand, Strandslag 8 and 6. Those beaches are located between Scheveningen and Kijkduin, another important beach area of The Hague.

Kijkduin Beach: The Quiet Charm of The Hague’s Coastline

Tucked away on the southwestern edge of The Hague, Kijkduin Beach offers a peaceful and scenic alternative to the bustling shores of Scheveningen. Whether you're looking for a quiet day by the sea, a scenic bike ride through the dunes, or a cozy evening with ocean views, Kijkduin Beach delivers a more laid-back and natural coastal experience—just a short ride from the city center. The beach is especially popular with families, thanks to its calm vibe, accessible paths, and nearby playgrounds.

If you are looking for a more lively ambiance: the closer you go to the center of Kijkduin, the more beach clubs and restaurants you can find. The recently renovated Kijkduin Boulevard features cozy cafés, beach pavilions, a food court and small shops. In summer, beach clubs open their terraces, offering everything from fresh seafood to cocktails at sunset.

Nature lovers will appreciate the proximity to Solleveld and Westduinpark, protected dune areas rich in wildlife and walking trails. It’s also a great spot for kite surfing, thanks to the steady coastal winds and open space. South from Kijkduin, near Strandslag 1, more quiet and wild beaches are waiting for you. This is also the perfect spot to walk your dog, and some beach clubs even allow your furry friends and offer them some well derserved fresh water 😊

Security on the beach

Security is everything when being close to the water with kids. Here are some tips to help keep erveyone safe:

  • Go for a swim when there is lifeguard -you can recognize this by the red-yellow flags on the beach;
  • Look at the color of the flag upon arrival and check if it is safe to swim;
  • Do you have a question? Go to a rescue station;
  • Give your child a wristband with your details;
  • Never let your child go into the sea alone;
  • Never go into the sea with an air mattress;
  • Do not go into the sea if you can't swim.

Lost child - point out the Miffy poles to your kids
Children can easily get lost on crowded beaches. Give your child a wristband with the name and with your (mobile) telephone number or place on the beach. You can pick up a free wristband at 1 of the beach posts. Agree on a fixed spot on the beach, for example the 'Miffy poles' or beach pavilions. Is your child missing for 15 minutes or more? Report this to the rescue brigade or the police. Lost children are often taken here.
