Going through customs

Travelling within the European Union (EU) is as easy like travelling between Eindhoven and Amsterdam: you do not need to go through customs. When you travel outside of the European Union, it may take more time to go through extra security checks. You will have to be able to identify yourself at all times, so make sure that you have your ID or passport on you.

What can you bring?

You are allowed to bring alcohol and tobacco into the Netherlands, but there are certain limits to importing these products. Moreover, you are not allowed to take any:

  • endangered species of flora and fauna
  • art and antiques
  • (toy) guns
  • drugs
  • over 10,000 euros in cash

See the full list for prohibited items in customs at the Dutch Tax Office's website.

Medication

Are you bringing any medication on your trip to or from the Netherlands? Please be aware that you may only bring medication for personal use. When you move to the Netherlands, you are not allowed to have your medication shipped into the country.

Always make sure whether you need special permission to travel with your medication. Several kinds of medication are part of the so-called Opium law, which means you need special permission from both your doctor and the government.

Consent letter for minors travelling abroad

Do you intend to travel abroad with a child over whom you do not have parental authority? Please use this form to prove that the persons with parental authority over the child have given you permission to travel abroad with the child.
