Registration for international students starts in August
September is the start of a new academic semester and universities in The Hague region will be welcoming new international students. Before the courses begin, it is important as a student to take care of all the necessary formalities, such as municipal registration.
New international students have to make an appointment for municipal registration.
As from 1 August 2025, you can make an appointment for registration. The first available appointments will be on 25 August. The registration takes place at The Hague International Centre in City Hall.
Registration is mandatory. International students who will be staying in The Hague for longer than 4 months are required to be registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP). Students will then get a citizen service number (BSN) which is necessary to purchase health insurance and to open a bank account.
Good to know:
- You will receive your BSN during the municipal registration appointment;
- You can use your BSN to arrange other formalities, such as opening a bank account, DigiD, arranging a Dutch health insurance (if required) and starting a student job;
- It is important to bring the required documents to register. Otherwise, you need to make another appointment. You need to bring a passport, rental agreement or other proof of residence;
- Make sure to print your rental agreement. You cannot print at The Hague International Centre, so make sure to print at your university, the Central library or a copy shop;
- After your appointment you will have the opportunity to ask other questions about living and studying in The Hague.
