RNI

Staying less than four months

Most individuals living in the Netherlands for 4 months or more are registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP). When moving abroad, their personal data is transferred to the non-residents section of the BRP. This is known as the Non-residents Records Database (RNI). Individuals who plan to stay in the Netherlands for less than 4 months can be registered as a non-resident in the RNI database, and obtain a citizen service number (BSN).

How do I register via the RNI process?

To register in the RNI, you have to make an appointment at one of the 19 municipalities with an RNI desk. Non-residents wishing to obtain a BSN in The Hague must schedule an appointment with the municipality of The Hague.

Requesting an RNI extract

In certain situations, you may be required to provide evidence of your non-resident status—for instance, to confirm your deregistration from the Dutch BRP after relocating abroad. In such cases, you can request an RNI extract

When requesting an RNI extract, make sure to specify which details need to be included, as the required information may vary depending on its intended use. If you're applying for an RNI extract from abroad, you can either authorise someone to collect it on your behalf or request it online using your DigiD.

MyRNI

MyRNI is a new online service that lets non-residents registered in the RNI, manage their details independently. Until recently, any changes to your contact details or temporary address details in the RNI database, had to be reported in person at one of the 19 RNI offices. With the launch of MyRNI, this is no longer required!

After logging in, users may enter, view, and update their temporary address and contact details. Individuals who have lived in the Netherlands for less than 4 months—thus not registered in the BRP—can also use MyRNI to confirm they have left the Netherlands.

Keeping your temporary address and contact details up to date, is important as it helps the government to stay in touch with you about your rights and responsibilities, and ensures you can be contacted in case of unexpected emergencies. Managing this information yourself also helps to prevent mistakes. You can also directly visit the English MyRNI page.

If you plan to stay in the Netherlands for longer than four months, you’ll need to register in the BRP. Further information is available here. If you'd like to read more about The Hague International Centre's other services, see here.
