Living in Leidschendam-Voorburg

The municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg is situated at the border of the city of The Hague. Home to approximately 75,000 residents, the area is known for its green spaces and outdoor facilities. It is also home to the largest shopping centre in the Netherlands, as well as a number of international companies and workspaces. The town of Voorburg is thought to be the oldest city in the Netherlands, having celebrated its 2000th birthday in 1988. 

Everyday Life 

Regarded as the suburbs of The Hague, the towns of Leidschendam and Voorburg are known for their natural surroundings and leisure facilities, such as the popular recreation area Vlietland. The area has three lakes, as well as plenty of nature areas and parks. These offer great opportunities for trying outdoor sports such as sailing, windsurfing, mountain biking, and horse riding. If you’re more of an indoor person, you can find the largest shopping mall in the country here – the Westfield Mall of the Netherlands. It features over 200 shops and multiple eateries, as well as an 11-screen cinema. For more shopping options, you can find fashion boutiques and quaint cafes in the old town centre of Voorburg. 

In terms of housing, the area has a mix of apartments, detached and semi-detached family homes. And although the residents of Leidschendam-Voorburg vary in age, the area remains very family-orientated. 

 

Working and Education

Several global companies and organisations that employ many internationals can be found in the Leidschendam-Voorburg area. These include new start-ups as well as big names in business such as Huawei, Siemens, Jacobs, and Fugro. The nearby city centre of The Hague also makes these neighbouring towns a popular choice for those working downtown. International educational institutions are also easily accessible, with two HSV international primary schools in the nearby neighbourhood of Bezuidenhout, and three British schools, one in Mariahoeve (primary) and two in Leidschenveen (primary and secondary).

Healthcare

Alongside over 20 gyms and sports clubs to maintain a healthy lifestyle, Leidschendam-Voorburg also has all the daily medical services you could need, including local doctors (huisartsen), dentists (tandartsen), opticians, and many more. The main hospital institutions in The Hague and Leiden can also be easily accessed from the municipality. 

Transport Links

An efficient tram and bus network make travelling between The Hague and Leidschendam-Voorburg a breeze. By train, the town of Voorburg is only a five-minute journey from The Hague Central Station. For car access, the A4 motorway (to Amsterdam) runs directly through Leidschendam-Voorburg, as well as the A12 (to Utrecht) and N14 (which takes you to Scheveningen beach on the northwest outskirts of The Hague).
