With figureheads like the Peace Palace (including the International Court of Justice), Europol and the International Criminal Court, The Hague is worldwide known as the international city of peace and justice. Here, tens of thousands of people are working every day to build a more peaceful and just world. People come to The Hague from all over the world to work together on solutions to global problems.

The Hague regularly features in the world news because international legal cases are tried in the many courts and tribunals, such as the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. But The Hague is more than courts, tribunals and palaces.

International organisations

The Hague serves as a home base for some 200 international organisations that work to make this world a more just, secure and peaceful place. These organisations are very diverse, including important intergovernmental organisations arising from international treaties between countries. The most prominent of them being:

  • The Peace Palace. It houses the International Court of Justice, the official judicial body of the United Nations, and the Permanent Court of Arbitration. Here, conflicts between countries are settled in a peaceful manner.
  • The International Criminal Court. This is where individuals are put on trial for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
  • The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. This Nobel Prize-winning organisation works hard towards the prohibition of chemical weapons.

Due to the presence of prestigious intergovernmental organisations, many non-governmental organisations have also established themselves in The Hague: UNICEF, Oxfam Novib and Cordaid for example.

The Hague’s reputation as an international hub for peace and justice also attracts knowledge centres, educational institutions and research institutes. Clingendael, T.M.C. Asser Instituut The Hague Academy for International Law and the International Institute of Social Studies draw professionals to the city from all around the world. And with the international campuses of The Hague University of Applied Sciences, and the universities of Leiden, Delft and Rotterdam, the city attracts a steady stream of highly educated talent.
